When we leased our last office, we were so excited to move out of my house and into an office space. We thought that we would be there for many years. However, two short years later, we ran into a couple of bumps in the road. For starters, our building was owned by four separate companies, and one day I was informed that our option to expand had been cancelled. One of the owners needed the space next to ours, and planned to take it. Could I have sued over this? Probably, but to what end? The owners were nice people, and it did not make sense for them to move. After all, it was their building!
Then there was the issue of the pole, which sat right in the middle of our space. The pole could not be moved, and while we knew we could work around it, furniture-wise, we also knew that if we moved at a later time, our furniture would not necessarily fit well into another space.
Initially, I had signed a two-year lease, as we were just a year old at the time. We did not really know how fast our business would grow! Now that we have moved into our new space, I find myself thinking, “Had we been able to expand into the adjacent suite would we still be there?” Perhaps. Then again, our new space is so perfect that I am glad we moved. This time, we made a conscious choice to choose a bigger building, so that when we grow, we know the landlord will be able to accommodate us.
