When I first heard that RealMassive was going to offer its service, DataQu, at no cost in 2020, and no credit card sign-ups and no catches I was thrilled. Then after learning that this decision was taken as a result of listening to the industry I was really jumping for joy!
To further add up to my extreme joy and pride of being in an industry that is fighting every day to survive and turn every lemon into lemonade I reached out to RealMassive with some hard-hitting questions. I wanted to know so much more about this decision!
Kevin Green graciously answered some tough questions and I was beaming with pride when I realized that the DNA of #CRE survey respondents might have had a hand in this. I was just overjoyed beyond my wildest dreams. As you may know, Buildout and theBrokerList released the survey results at the beginning of June and all eyes have been on the survey to learn from the feedback. We are so proud of the almost 900 respondents for their candor and honesty which played a part in the RealMassive decision and the over 25 promotional partners that helped drive the respondents! Thanks to all who participated, voiced concern, and gave such honest feedback. Be proud.

We heard RealMassive has made the decision to offer access to it’s comprehensive CRE data platform, DataQu, for free for the remainder of 2020. What is the mission behind this generous offering?
The decision to offer DataQu at no cost was rooted in the desire to provide industry professionals with financial relief and to empower them to embrace a data-driven future. For too long, CRE data was a story of the “Have’s” and “Have Not’s.”
The price for commercial real estate property has been rising consistently for years. Even during the early months of the pandemic, other platforms increased prices or removed lower-priced access, essentially forcing users to make a tough decision about how to move forward. At a time when the industry needs to be enabled in every way possible to ensure a quick recovery, there was little being done in the technology space to support individuals. The decision to offer DataQu at no cost was rooted in the desire to provide industry professionals with financial relief and to empower them to embrace a data-driven future. RealMassive’s mission has always been to democratize data in commercial real estate. When more people have access, they make better decisions. Data is something that must be widely available. Imagine navigating the pandemic without clarity around the numbers?
How different would our response be if we had no idea how quickly and easily the virus spreads?
This same hypothesis applies to CRE data. What decisions would we make if we could see and share data broadly?
The industry has been vocal about the role data will play in the future of CRE. Every day, customers share their dissatisfaction with current solutions and their desire for more comprehensive and transparent data options. Research from the DNAofCRE supports just how valuable data is and that the role it plays in our industry will only continue to increase in the coming year.Every day, customers share their dissatisfaction with current solutions and their desire for more comprehensive and transparent data options. The industry has made such huge strides forward in terms of innovation and technology adoption. Stopping now would be detrimental to industry growth.
By offering complimentary access to DataQu, how is RealMassive hoping to empower the commercial real estate industry?
When people have access to information, they can increase the value they bring to their customers and communities. When they have access to real-time data, they can not only see what’s happened in the past, but they can more accurately predict what will happen in the future.
DataQu combines both historical property information with real-time on-market listings to provide our users with one, comprehensive platform. Accessing all of this information in one place saves users a substantial amount of time and eliminates the need to access multiple solutions and then rationalize that data into one complete property record.
The cost of all the available platforms the industry is accessing now often exceeds thousands of dollars a month. Even access to a single platform could be over $10,000 a month. The pricing structure for data access is commercial real estate is wildly out of line with the costs other industries pay for data access. When considering these costs, businesses are going to have to choose between accessing data and paying employees.
Unfortunately, many data providers have failed to provide any relief to subscribers, leaving them with little choice but to eliminate staff. This flows downhill and decreases the quality of service they can provide and eventually it’s a slippery slope to the bottom.
The industry needs more choice and flexibility. Those who are going through a hard time and worried about what the next 3 months will hold, need to know that they have a place to turn to access this data that can help them rebuild their business without being handicapped by over-priced subscriptions.
What initiatives is RealMassive taking to provide partnerships for existing customers?
All existing customers are being provided complimentary access for the remainder of 2020. RealMassive has offered to refund any subscription fees paid to date and is suspending any future payment for the remainder of the year. Additionally, we have also offered to extend the length of the subscription by 6 months if a user prefers to continue paying through this time period.
The response has been overwhelmingly positive. Many customers have expressed that it will improve their current financial situation and help them plan for the recovery.
Additionally, we’ve integrated robust feedback tools for our users to provide feedback on what they need to be successful. Every DataQu user will have the ability to request features or data sets directly in the application. They can also vote on recommended enhancements that others provided which ensures that the most impactful items are added to the platform rapidly.
As a modern technology company, we can move quickly and without the burden of legacy infrastructure and the “we’ve always done things this way” mentality. This flexibility allows us to truly respond to user needs and demonstrate our commitment to improving access to data for everyone. All existing customers are being provided complimentary access for the remainder of 2020. So, what’s in it for RealMassive?
There is a massive amount of skepticism and misinformation when it comes to CRE Data. For years, the focus has been on how much data a platform has versus how accurate that data is and how its sourced. It’s become a numbers game that fails to serve the actual end-user.
It’s not challenging to add 50 Million properties to a database. That information is available and has been for years. What’s important is deciphering the data that is valuable from the data that is not. At RealMassive, our focus has been less on the total size of the database and more on the usability and value of our data.
Our team of data scientists and analysts are constantly evaluating the data we obtain to remove properties that are not critical to our audience. We have shunned the concept of “bigger is better” and decided to listen to our users to understand the data they need, how they want to consume it, and what data is overwhelming. It’s not challenging to add 50 Million properties to a database. To build the commercial real estate property and data platform of the future requires feedback from users across all segments. By offering access to DataQu at no cost, users have the opportunity to influence the direction of the product. We can collaborate with more people to better understand their wants and needs versus forcing information and features on them that they don’t want or need… and certainly don’t want to pay for.
Commercial Real Estate is full of really smart people and RealMassive values the needs of every user. Instead of forcing overly complicated software on them with features and data they don’t need, we can rapidly build them the tools they need to be effective and a community they want to be a part of.
