Lately I’ve been thinking about surfing, and how it relates to my vocation as a Sperry Van Ness advisor.
There is both an art and a science to Commercial Real Estate. In Columbus, Ohio where I keep my offices, each municipality and neighborhood is a microcosm of the national market. Columbus and the surrounding areas are filled with neighborhoods in rise or decline, and populated by buyers and sellers who operate independently yet still move in sync with the market’s ebb and flow. In this way, commercial real estate investors—whether buyers or sellers – are like surfers skillfully threading the curls of big waves. Just as investors can’t control the market, surfers can’t control the swell of the sea, but that doesn’t prevent them from succeeding. Instead their skill and expertise allows them to bide their time, wait for the right wave, and then climb aboard for the ride of their life.
But knowing how to pick a wave is only the beginning. Once on the wave, a surfer’s ride is only as good as his or her skill level permits. As a Sperry Van Ness advisor, I and my team have prepared ourselves to make the most of any given market conditions. We’ve been able to watch the way the Columbus, Ohio market moves on its own rhythm, learning how its ups and downs combine with the swings of other local markets, eventually rolling up into the national level. Our team benefits from the deep research provided by the Sperry Van Ness network, then combines it with our understanding of the situation on the ground. The result is an ability to deliver outstanding service for our clients.
No single player is big enough to create the market, but a combination of experience, insight, and hard work can allow a real estate advisor to assist clients in making the best possible decisions for their commercial real estate portfolio.
There is one very big difference between investment real estate and surfing, and this concept is perhaps the most amazing of all: that in real estate the players and participants create the waves even as we ride them to the shore. The entirety of supply and demand is created by the aggregate of all of our actions, while each of us is reacting to the very market we created. Understanding this delicate interaction is the art and science of commercial real estate, whether in Columbus, Ohio, or nationally. I and my fellow advisors at NemethREA would be delighted if you chose to ride those waves with us.
